    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

access>CINEMA is delighted to announce the release of Radu Jude’s award-winning* new feature The Happiest Girl In The World, screening at the Irish Film Institute from Friday 28th May.

The latest high profile feature from the Romanian new wave, The Happiest Girl in the World is an acerbic comedy that tells the story of Delia (Andreea Bosneag), a girl who wins a car in a competition and the subsequent arguments with her parents about what to do with it.

Delia Fratila is a normal eighteen-year-old from a poor family living in a small Romanian town. Her fortunes change when she becomes the lucky winner of a luxury car through sending off bottle labels in an advertising competition.

Delia and her parents set off to Bucharest to film a TV commercial to advertise her win. The shoot initially appears straightforward – all she needs to do is sit in the car, drink the product, and smile and thank the drinks company. However, the day descends into a series of complications and amusing clashes between the director of the commercial and the directors of the drinks company.

There is tension off-camera also as Delia and her parents bicker over what they intend to do with the car; Delia wants to keep it for herself, while her parents wish to sell it, seeing it as their ticket out of poverty. As the arguments intensify the shoot itself becomes increasingly absurd and protracted; what appeared to be a stroke of luck for Delia turns into a troubling emotional experience that makes her question her relationship with her family.

Combining rich irony with familial acrimony, The Happiest Girl in the World is a deceptively simple tale with universal appeal.
