Carey announces Community Development Programme Public Consultation
Pat Carey, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, has initiated a public consultation process on how the community development approach meets the needs of disadvantaged communities.
The Community Development Programme was established in 1990 in recognition of the role of community development and a community development approach in tackling exclusion, poverty and disadvantage. The Programme provides multi-annual funding to some 180 designated community development projects and organisations that focus on communities experiencing social and economic disadvantage. The intention is that Projects actively engage with people experiencing poverty to participate in a collective and meaningful way.
The National Development Plan (2007-2013) envisages the continuation of support for community development and the Department is currently engaged in a consultation process with Community Development Projects and other interested groups and organisations to develop and improve the Programme for the duration of the NDP.
As part of this process, interested parties and members of the public are invited to submit their views and proposals on how the community development approach can best meet the needs of disadvantaged communities.
Minister Carey said that the Programme has been of significant benefit to many of the more disadvantaged in our communities over a long number of years. “The rising tide has not necessarily lifted all boats”, said Minister Carey, “and it is my desire to provide Communities with continued support which is focussed on making a real difference. I would welcome the views of the public and other groups and organisations on how we might continue to improve delivery of such services.”
