THE STAR OF FAILTE TOWERS DON BAKER AND IRISH SILVER MEDALIST BOXING STAR KEN EGAN SUPPORT THE IRISH CHARITY HEALTH ACTION OVERSEAS (HAO) TO RAISE FUNDS TO PURCHASE ACCOMODATION FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IN ROMANIA
September 2008: Don Baker will be performing at a black-tie charity ball on 20th September in Clontarf Castle to help raise €100,000, to fund the purchase of accommodation for young adults with special needs in Romania. Tiger Woods has donated a signed golf glove and the British Open Champion Padraig Harrington, has pledged “mystery” golfing memorabilia to be auctioned on the night.
Entertainers Sharon Crosbie will be M.C. and Auctioneer for the night with Shay Healy as co-host and all monies raised at the Rainbow Ball will be used to purchase accommodation to house four young adults with special needs as part of HAO’s community integration programme in Romania. The young adults have already succeeded in moving from institutions to semi-independent living and are now ready to take the next steps of living in smaller apartments in the heart of their own communities. They all have jobs in the locality, working in supermarkets and valeting businesses.
HAO Chief Executive Officer, Audrey Cranston is delighted with the support offered to HAO, including performances from Ann Bushnell, Lady and the Tramps and Don Baker. “When Don was invited to perform at the Ball he jumped at the chance to help us support these young adults. Our goal is to acquire accommodation that will enable the young adults to have a more normal lifestyle, sharing accommodation in smaller groups with their chosen flat-mates.”
Dublin plastering contractor Paul Traynor has been working with HAO for the last 4 years. “The accommodation is to help these terrific people realise their full potential. Seeing the young adults quality of life improving and becoming more integrated in their local communities is enormously rewarding and is the reason why I have organised this Ball.”
However, Audrey also recognises that it is ambitious to try to raise €100,000 on one night. “On the night we will be auctioning a number of items including a diamond valued at €9,000. We also have a fabulous detached property in Bulgaria to auction, donated by Halina Ashdown Shields. So although we will have to work very hard to hit our target, I am confident that we will achieve it”.
Without the work of organisations such as HAO in Romania, young people with disabilities would languish in unsuitable institutional accommodation indefinitely and some would end up on the streets.
