Buna,

Clonee couple booted out

A CLONEE couple were among the latest batch of illegal immigrants to be deported from Ireland last week.Romanian Virgil Dumitru was deported last Tuesday night, and his wife Ana Maria, the following afternoon. The young construction worker was arrested as he arrived at work.
“His car was stopped and he was told to leave,” said chairperson of the Romanian Community of Ireland, Vasile Ros.
“Usually if two are in a family, they arrest the male and then they will give a chance to the female to go with them or leave the next day.”
Mr Dumitru had lived and worked in Ireland for nearly four years, according to Mr Ros. Mrs Dumitru arrived just over a year ago. The couple married last year.
Mr Ros claims the couple have now returned to the poverty they had so desperately fled from.
“They will be living with relatives in the same village I am from,” Mr Ros told Northside People.
He said they were among about 100 Romanian people due to be deported from Ireland during the week on planes leaving last Tuesday and Friday.

A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed that Romanians were among 44 people deported on a chartered flight on Tuesday; the others were Moldavians. However, the spokesperson refused to confirm how many people were being deported later in the week and added that the department could not comment on individual cases.
Others who are facing deportation, according to Vasile Ros, include a family living in Drumcondra and photo-journalist Ioan Bodnar who works for the Romanian Community of Ireland’s newspaper.
Mr Bodnar, who received a Department of Justice letter informing him he would be deported last Tuesday, had not been deported at time of going to press, but his situation was unclear. He has been living in the north inner city with his American-born daughter and arrived in Ireland about five years ago.
Mr Ros told Northside People that despite Mr Bodnar appealing to be allowed stay on humanitarian grounds and producing a large number of files to support his application, he failed to obtain asylum.
Romania is one of a small number of countries whose asylum applications are ‘fast-tracked’ by the Department of Justice.
Romania, along with Bulgaria, Croatia, and South Africa, are considered ‘safe countries’ by Ireland.
Romania is due to become an EU state on January 1, 2007.
Mr Ros believes Romanians are being “discriminated” against by the Department of Justice and are being treated especially harshly in the run-up to Romania’s accession to the EU.
“No other non-nationals living in Ireland are targeted by these measures of law enforcement at the same rate and use of force,” he claimed.
“Members of our community have been taken by force from their beds, from buses, from work places and from the streets by Garda National Immigration Bureau officers.”
Mr Ros has written an impassioned letter to Justice Minister Michael McDowell asking for a total suspension of all deportations of Romanian nationals immediately.
He is also asking that their situation be addressed in new immigration legislation due to be drawn up later in the year.
However, the Department of Justice spokesperson rejected Mr Ros’s claims of discrimination and pointed out that the latest deportations “didn’t land on them overnight”.
“They would have been turned down by the Refugee Appeals Commissioner, then lost an appeal to the Refugee Appeals Tribunal and finally failed in an appeal to the Minister for Justice,” the spokesperson said.
“They would then have been given the option of going home voluntarily or being deported.”
The spokesperson confirmed that those deported had exhausted the application process and could never return to Ireland.
Mr Ros conceded that immigrants from Romania tend to come to Ireland for economic reasons.
While his country is no longer the poverty-stricken backwater it was when he left - and certainly isn’t as oppressive as it was under the Ceausescu regime - life there is still tougher than in Ireland, he points out.
“It’s becoming better; it’s beginning to build up slowly, new businesses are coming along and people are willing to invest, and you can have enough – but not a lot.”

Ros in Irlanda.

Erai in pijamale.
