Dari Jeyran, an Iranian is a women’s and political rights activist recently arrived from Iran . She has been involved in the struggles against the government there. She has been involved in solidarity work with trade unionists and students and also campaigned for prisoner’s rights. She has been at the forefront of providing info rmation about what is happening in Iran out to activists abroad. She is also opposed to any war or sanctions on Iran HOPI, and is holding 3 public meetings:

Banúlacht International Women's Day Conference



Subject: Reimagining Women’s Human Rights

Date: Friday, March 7th 2008

Time: 9.00am to 5.30 pm

Venue: Axis Centre, Ballymun, Dublin



The conference is for women from community development and community education organisations, non-governmental organisations, national organisations, as well as individual women, feminist activists and all those interested in feminism and development from a local and a global perspective.



The conference will address the questions:

· What are the key women’s human rights issues today for women in Ireland and globally?

· What are the links between community development and human rights?

· What can women in Ireland do to promote and fulfil women's human rights in solidarity with women in the South?

Valerie O’Carroll—Community activist in the women’s sector, currently working with the National Women’s Council of Ireland as a campaign development worker.



Amanda Khozi Mukwashi—Head of External Relations with Skillshare International and Vice Chair of Akina Mama wa Afrika.



Sarah Mukasa—Ugandan feminist activist who currently works as programme manager with the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF).


Anne Marlborough

Anne Marlborough is a feminist human rights activist, currently working as CEO of Doras Luimni, an NGO which supports migrants in the mid-west.

Subject: SPEAK OUT - International Women’s Day Talk

A group of Irish women as well as women from a variety of different countries and cultural backgrounds will speak about their lives as women today. This will be followed by some community singing from the MIA Intercultural Singing Group. Members of the public are welcome to attend and refreshments will be provided.

K.A.S.I is organising a walk to show support & solidarity with women all over the world: women in war torn countries, victims of torture, domestic abuse & sexual violence, and those marginalised & discriminated on grounds of gender and to acknowledge those women working towards justice, peace & equality.

DIRECTIONS FROM DUBLIN TO MOSNEY



From Dublin take the M1 Motorway direction Drogheda/Belfast. Pass sign showing Motorway toll 8 km.



Take the next exit marked:



Drogheda South / Julianstown / Laytown



Go round the 1st roundabout to take direction right, (making sure not to re-take the motorway) go straight to the next roundabout bear left, straight on and passing the signs for Gormanston/Balbriggan (to your left).

You will then automatically come off on to the old Drogheda/Belfast road and pass an Apple Green garage on your right. Shortly after that you will see a sign for Mosney and go into the middle of the road (filter line) and turn right for Mosney. You will now be on the Mosney Road .

Come along to the end (you will see a large advertising panel on the Mosney grounds) and the road bears to the left -take that direction – (dangerous bend) and turn right in at the barrier and make your way to Main Gate.

Subject: Feminist Walking Tour of Dublin

Date: Saturday, March 8th 2008

Time: 2.30pm

Venue: St Stephen's Green Arch.

The tour will be an info rmative and entertaining take on women's history in Ireland - from the Brehon Laws, through women's role in the early formation of the state, labour movements, the resurgence of feminism in the 1970's, the movement against domestic/sexual violence, and the continuing struggle for reproductive rights. There will be a particular emphasis on the contemporary women's movement in its many guises and acknowledging the challenges facing all women, particularly those experiencing poverty or exclusion and
women from minority ethnic communities.

An info rmation booklet/map will be provided on the day (and an activity sheet to keep the younger feminists amused!)

All are welcome to attend - no need to book. You are also invited to come along in your best drag/ feminist fancy dress! Meet on Sat March 8th at 2.30pm at the main entrance to Stephen's Green (opposite the shopping centre).

Ringsend Action Project

Subject: "The Door" Sculpture Unveiling

Venue: Ringsend Library Plaza

Ringsend Action Project is using this occasion for the unveiling of the sculpture because “The Door" symbolises the Hall Door that most victims of domestic violence are trapped behind.

Crucially, “The Door” is ajar, representing the fact that, with help and support, there is always a way out of a situation of domestic violence and hope for the future.

Made of Bronze and wood this representational piece is intended to be a beacon for those who choose to seek sanctuary from physical, sexual, and mental abuse.

The Co. Wexford Community Women’s Collective

The Co. Wexford Community Women’s Collective are organising an International Women’s Day event on Saturday, 8th March from 11am – 3pm.

Presentations from Amnesty, the Wexford Women with Disabilities Group, Integration of African Children in Ireland Network and the Co. Wexford Traveller Women’s Network. There will also be workshops and sessions throughout the day. Everything from poetry readings, belly dancing, song facilitation, a community artists exhibition and much much more. Food and refreshments will be provided throughout the day and there will also be face painting and sketching for the little ones.

Clare Women's Network

Laois Amnesty

Subject: “In Memory of….”

Venue: Dunamaise Arts Centre

Laois Amnesty will unveil– a poignant exhibition of 140 pairs of shoes commemorating each woman who has lost her life through violence in Ireland since 1996. The exhibit will be on view on the ground floor of the Arts Centre from 9 a.m.

At 3 p.m. former Laois Writer-in-Residence, Jean O’Brien will read some of her beautiful poetry in the Gallery section of the Arts Centre. Jean, a Dubliner, has two collections of poetry published: - “The Shadow Keeper” (Salmon Publishing, 1997) and “Dangerous Dresses” (Bradshaw Books, 2005). She will be joined on the day by members of the Laois Writer’s Group. Some wonderful music will also be performed by members of Laois School of Music. Complimentary teas/coffees will be provided.

The day’s events will be rounded off at 4 p.m. with the release of dozens of pink and purple balloons – these are the colours used by Amnesty International in their “Stop Violence Against Women” campaign.

This promises to be a wonderful event of rememberance and celebration. It is one of a series of events that Laois Amnesty will hold throughout 2008 to highlight their ‘Stop Violence Against Women’ campaign.

Amnesty International is also lobbying for a review and reform of the civil and criminal justice system in relation to violence against women cases. Petitions will be available to sign at the event in the Arts Centre.
